DARE 1

The Canadian Council of Muslim Women’s (CCMW) Digital Anti-Racism Education (DARE) Project, funded by the Government of Canada, aims to combat online hate and Islamophobia by empowering racialized women, girls, and allies with tools to counter discrimination. Phase One (2019–2020) focused on building digital literacy through e-learning modules like Racism 101 and Countering Cyberhate 101, along with training sessions and the #DARETOBEAWARE campaign. Expanding on this, Phase Two emphasized intersectional experiences of marginalized Muslim women and girls, including Black, Indigenous, Francophone, queer, and differently-abled individuals. It introduced an anti-Islamophobia e-learning module, held 60 workshops training 4,000 individuals, and launched the #Hate2Healing campaign during Islamic Heritage Month in 2021, featuring stories of lived experiences to raise awareness and promote healing globally.

As of 2024, we have delivered over 200 workshops to more than 9,000 participants through the DARE project. And now, it is expanding as a learning hub through thiswebsite, where our workshop offerings can be found, along with other learning resources and opportunities.

Our Stories

These stories are submissions by Muslims in Canada who responded to our call to action to share their lived experiences of hate, racism and Islamophobia. The stories were collected as part of CCMW’s Digital Anti-Racism Education Phase 1 & 2 Projects.

As part of CCMW’s Digital Anti-Racism Education Phase 1 Project, CCMW launched #DareToBeAware! a unique, bilingual anti-hate social media campaign focused on empowering racialized girls and women with the right information and tools to counter online racism/hate/Islamophobia.

The #DareToBeAware! campaign aimed at empowering racialized girls and women with information and tools to effectively counter online racism/hate/Islamophobia. Internet users who participate in online hate speech can influence potential perpetrators who may engage in street racism or take violent action against marginalized communities. Women aged 18-24 are particularly at risk and Islamophobia only adds to their vulnerabilities on digital platforms.
